Working Out While Pregnant—Heck Yes or Ehh, No?

Is it safe to exercise during pregnancy? The answer is a resounding yes.

If you’re expecting and haven’t been sure whether you should maintain your current exercise regimen or if it’s safe to start something new, you’re not alone. Recommendations regarding physical activity during pregnancy have changed over the years. However, recent guidelines point to the proven safety and benefits of regular moderate physical activity in their support of prenatal exercise.

A 2015 study by ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) recommends 20-30 minutes per day of aerobic and strength-conditioning exercise for pregnant women with no risk factors. In partnership with ACSM (The American College of Sports Medicine), ACOG also states that a healthy woman may continue with her regular exercise regimen or begin a new program during pregnancy.

In fact, adding movement into your day can help relieve many common symptoms of pregnancy. By getting your blood flowing—whether by doing FIT4BABY classes, strength training, walking, or stretching—circulation within your body increases, which helps with everything from varicose veins to leg cramps and constipation. Back pain can also be reduced by strengthening the muscles of the body that help support it as your belly grows.

In addition to the physical benefits, exercising while pregnant also supports mental health, with regular movement believed to aid in reducing depression and anxiety.

It goes without saying that you should always consult your medical provider before starting a new exercise program. However, if your pregnancy is low risk with no pre-existing conditions, it is very likely your provider will approve—and encourage—the movement! Those with moderate and/or high risk pregnancies may also be able to continue existing workout patterns, but your provider will be able to provide individualized guidance.

Expecting moms in Glen Mills, West Chester, Kennett Square, or northern Delaware can find their movement—and their community—with FIT4MOM. Check out FIT4BABY, our prenatal fitness class, to stay active and meet other local moms. Your first class is always FREE! Claim it here.
